I read the Hunger Games trilogy 💘
Dear readers,
Hello! How are you ? It's been a long time since I've written my last article. Summer came and went, and I (unfortunately) went back to school. Day 1, I had English language and literature (my favourite subject) with my new teacher, she announced that we would be reading (and analysing) The Hunger Games. I had been meaning to read this book, but I never quite got to it. So, the following week we start chapter 1. I am not exaggerating when I say it was love at first sight (or rather, first page). I was HOOKED. As a good student, I tried to read with the rest of the class, but they were so slow!!!!! So, since I'm only human, I took it home and finished it in a week. I ordered the next book (Catching Fire) and finished it in 4 days. And then finally, I read Mockingjay. I think it is (tied with Harry Potter) the best book series I have ever read. Anyways, today I'm going to be writing about the first Hunger Games book. Let's gooooooo!Summary: 16 year old Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12, in a country called Panem. There are 12 districts and the Capitol (where the rich live). District 12 is the poorest district, which is why Katniss struggles to find food for her and her family. Every year in Panem, there is game show held, called the Hunger Games. One boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 will be selected at random (in an event called The Reaping ) from each district, and sent into an arena to fight to the death. One year, Katniss prepares for the Hunger Games as usual, but is shocked when her very own sister Primrose was selected. Seeing no other alternative, Katniss volunteers to take her little sister's place in the Hunger Games. She and the other contestant Peeta Mellark are sent to the Capitol to prepare for and play the games with the aide of their mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, who once won the Games himself.
My opinion: Like I said, this is the best book I have ever read, so dystopian but also, not as dark as one would think. It talks a lot about survival and is told in first person, so we really get Katniss's thoughts. It's really interesting to see how the Capitol views the Hunger Games as opposed to the districts, as well as how the controlling government makes sure that is the way it is. Another reason I really enjoyed this book is because of the amazing characters, and possibly because I identify with Katniss on many levels? I mean, she's a great role model for kids, teens and even adults (we could all learn a thing or two from her) because it is made very clear that she is not perfect. The plot twists are also really amazing, and, overall, the story is just extremely gripping. And this is a weird observation, but I found myself really analysing the metaphors that were used (i.e. "girl on fire" or "boy with the bread") so that's either Suzanne Collins's incredible writing, or just the fact that I like English class a bit too much. In any case, it's been a long time since I've enjoyed reading this much, and I genuinely want to that Suzanne Collins. I mean, I think about the Hunger Games 24/7.
Rating: I mean I've hyped this book up so much that it would be nothing short of idiotic to give it anything less than a 10/10 because I was truly astounded by how thought-provoking it was! I mean, I would recommend this to anyone and everyone, honestly no one deserved to miss out. It was light, dystopian (but not gruesome) and just dumbfounding. It was my best read this year for sure (I mean, I literally cried once, that NEVER happens).
Anyways, thank you so very much for reading my article, and I hope you read the Hunger Games after hearing my opinion (READ IT NOW OR I WILL FIND YOU) because you will not regret it.
Have a great week!
